Las Mayas- Colmenar Viejo Nr Madrid, Spain
Every year on the 2nd May in a tradition that dates back to Medieval times the families and friends of 5 of the chosen village girls aged between about 7 and 11 build altars with flowers and herbs that they have gathered from the countryside the previous day. The girls or “Las Mayas” then have to sit on the altars for around 2 hours, with out talking, smiling or moving while roving musicians extoll their beauty and their friends dressed in white dresses and black boleros attend them and brush the villagers coats in exchange for coins. The Mayas and attendants then process to a local church to complete the festival.
